Pop-up assembly of 3D structures actuated by heat shrinkable polymers

چکیده
Folding 2D sheets into desired 3D structures is a promising fabrication technique that can find a wide range of applications. Compressive buckling provides an attractive strategy to actuate the folding and can be applied to a broad range of materials. Here a new and simple method is reported to achieve controlled compressive buckling, which is actuated by a heat shrinkable polymer sheet. The buckling deformation is localized at the pre-defined creases in the 2D sheet, resulting in sharp folding. Two approaches are developed to actuate the transformation, which follow similar geometric rules. In the first approach, the 2D precursor is pushed from outside, which leads to a 3D structure surrounded by the shrunk polymer sheet. Assembled 3D structures include prisms/pyramids with different base shapes, house roof, partial soccer ball, Miura-ori structure and insect wing. In the second approach, the 2D precursor is pulled from inside, which leads to a 3D structure enclosing the shrunk polymer sheet. Prisms/pyramids with different base shapes are assembled. The assembled structures are further tessellated to fabricate cellular structures that can be used as thermal insulator and crash energy absorber. They are also stacked vertically to fabricate complex multilayer structures. Supplementary material for this article is available online

Pattern Transformation of Heat-Shrinkable Polymer by Three-Dimensional (3D) Printing Technique
A significant challenge in conventional heat-shrinkable polymers is to produce controllable microstructures. Here we report that the polymer material fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing technique has a heat-shrinkable property, whose initial microstructure can undergo a spontaneous pattern transformation under heating. The underlying mechanism is revealed by evaluating internal strain...
متن کاملThermally-induced miniaturization for micro- and nanofabrication: progress and updates.
The field of micro- and nanofabrication has developed extensively in the past several decades with rising interest in alternative fabrication techniques. Growth of these areas has been driven by needs that remain unaddressed by traditional lithographical methods: inexpensive, upscalable, biocompatible, and easily integrated into complete lab-on-a-chip (LOC) systems. Shape memory polymers (SMPs)...
متن کاملMulti-style paper pop-up designs from 3D models
Paper pop-ups are interesting three-dimensional books that fascinate people of all ages. The design and construction of these pop-up books however are done manually and require a lot of time and effort. This has led to computer-assisted or automated tools for designing paper pop-ups. This paper proposes an approach for automatically converting a 3D model into a multi-style paper pop-up. Previou...
متن کاملMHD Flow and Heat Transfer of SiC-TiO2/DO Hybrid Nanofluid due to a Permeable Spinning Disk by a Novel Algorithm
This study intends to semi-analytically investigate the steady 3D boundary layer flow of a SiC-TiO2/DO hybrid nanofluid over a porous spinning disk subject to a constant vertical magnetic field. Here, the novel attitude to single-phase hybrid nanofluid model corresponds to considering nanoparticles and base fluid masses to compute solid equivalent volume fraction, solid equivalent de...
متن کاملA Paper-Based "Pop-up" Electrochemical Device for Analysis of Beta-Hydroxybutyrate.
This paper describes the design and fabrication of a "pop-up" electrochemical paper-based analytical device (pop-up-EPAD) to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)-a biomarker for diabetic ketoacidosis-using a commercial combination BHB/glucometer. Pop-up-EPADs are inspired by pop-up greeting cards and children's books. They are made from a single sheet of paper folded into a three-dimensional (3D)...
